Conditions Governing Access

Public access to these records is governed by the UK Data Protection Act 2018, the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the relevant version of the Scottish Government Records Management: Health and Social Care Code of Practice (Scotland). Whilst some records may be accessed freely by researchers, the aforementioned legislation and guidelines mean that records containing sensitive information on named individuals may be closed to the public for a set time.

Where records contain information relating to named deceased adults, they will be open 75 years after the latest date in the record, on the next 01 January. Records containing sensitive information on individuals below 18 years (living or deceased) or adults not proven to be deceased will be open 100 years after the latest date in the record, on the next 01 January. Biographical / Historical

The National Health Services (Scotland) Act 1947 set up Regional Hospital Boards and, within them, Boards of Management responsible for the administration of groups of hospitals. This system operated until the reorganisation of the National Health Service in 1974.

The Board of Management for East Lothian Hospitals formed part of the South Eastern Regional Hospital Board and consisted of the undernoted hospitals. Reference numbers in brackets refer to pre 1948 records of these hospitals. Alderston Convalescent Home, Haddington (LHB19) Belhaven Hospital, Dunbar Dunbar Cottage Hospital (LHB18) East Fortune Hospital, North Berwick (LHB39) Edington Cottage Hospital, North Berwick Haddington Smallpox Hospital Herdmanflat Hospital, Haddington¹ The Knoll Maternity Hospital, Duns² (LHB20) Polish Convalescent Home, Luffness House, Aberlady (closed 1956) Roodlands General Hospital, Haddington (LHB21) Vert Memorial Hospital, Haddington (LHB22) Whitchester Cottage Hospital, Duns²

From 1974 to 1984 these hospitals formed part of the North Lothian District of Lothian Health Board (see LHB27). Copies of press cuttings and notes relating to East Lothian hospitals will be found at GN79.

¹ From 1948-1957 Herdmanflat Hospital was part of the Rosslynlee and Haddington Mental Hospitals Board of Management. On the dissolution of that Board in April 1957 Herdmanflat Hospital transferred to the Board of Management for East Lothian Hospitals.

² On 1st April 1955 these hospitals transferred to the Borders Hospitals Board of Management.
