Scope and Contents

Papers of Rev. Prof. Robert Flint (1838-1910). Rev. Prof. Flint held the divinity chair at the University of Edinburgh from 1876 to 1903.

The collection is split into 5 sections:

MS FLI 1.1-6 Theological lectures

MS FLI 1.1 - Lectures on soteriology. Undated but with several additions loosely inserted, including 'Die Christliche Welt' from 18 February 1897.

MS FLI 1.2 - Lectures on the Trinity. Dates unclear, but potentially 1880 - 1881.

MS FLI 1.3 - Lectures on theological introduction; church history; history of doctrine; symbolics and apologetics. Date unclear, but potentially 1884. Notebook is not filled consistently, with some gaps and unused sections.

MS FLI 1.4 - Notes on Butler's Analogy. Part II. Lectures on Christian apologetics. Undated, with loose pages inserted.

MS FLI 1.5 - Lectures on the Westminster Confession of Faith. Undated. Less than half of the notebook is used, but many loose leaves are inserted.

MS FLI 1.6 - Lectures on theological introduction and the philosophy of religion. Date is unclear, but potentially 1883. Many additions loosely inserted.



MS FLI 2.1-6 Theological lectures.

MS FLI 2.1 - Lectures in Divinity given by Rev. Prof. Flint, 1887 - 1888. Lecture notes taken by D. J. Moir Porteous.

MS FLI 2.2 - Lectures on the history of Christian theology [down to Augustine]. Undated, with several additions loosely inserted.

MS FLI 2.3 - Belief and imagination in relgion. Undated, with many blank pages.

MS FLI 2.4 - On theology as philosphia ultima, being mainly notes on Prof. Chas Woodruff Shields' book 'Philosophia ultima; or science of the sciences'. Date unclear, but potentially 1904. Many blank pages, and evidence of pages being removed.

MS FLI 2.5 - Notes for lectures on agnosticism. Many blank pages, with a printed page from 'Senatus Academicus, 1890' loosely inserted.

MS FLI 2.6 - Lectures on creation and matter; pantheism; the Vedas; Greek Philosophy and the Scriptures. Many loose pages inserted.

MS FLI 3 - Miscellaneous lectures and sermons. Unbound and unpublished manuscript, presented to General Assembly Library by the Trustees of Rev. Prof. Flint's sister, Janet Johnstone Flint, May 1924. Papers are on a variety of subjects, and are generally in Rev. Prof. Flint's hand.

MS FLI 4 - Printed copy of Butler, Joseph, and Joseph Angus. 'The Analogy of Religion to the Constitution and Course of Nature: : Also, Fifteen Sermons, on Subjects Chiefly Ethical.' The Religious Tract Society; 1855. Volume contains part 1: of natural religion, only. Interleaved copy with annotations by Rev. Prof. Robert Flint. Bookplate and front flyleaf inscription, evidencing donation to the Church of Scotland Library by James King Hewison, D.D. in 1933. From the General Assembly Library.

MS FLI 5 - Printed copy of Macmillan, Donald. 'The Life of Robert Flint D.D., LL.D.' Hodder and Stoughton, 1914. With an additional photograph of Rev. Prof. Flint adhered in place. Two letters fron Janet Johnstone Flint to James King Hewson inserted at the rear, dated December 1911. Bookplate evidences donation to the Church of Scotland Library by James King Hewison, D.D. in 1933. From the General Assembly Library.
