Scope and Contents
Collection of 7 manuscript volumes belonging to James Fraser of Brea (1638-1698).
- 'Some miscellanies of divinity, practical and polemical; being a part of my thoughts, on diverse subjects, and at several occasions: Begun September 29 1663 by James Fraser of Brea'. Dated 21 March 1667 at the end of the volume. Many ownership marks and former shelfmarks present on the end boards and leaves, including 'Gask. William Hunter His Book. August 12 1730'.
- 'Short memoirs of the life of Sir James Fraser of Brea Bart, Min[iste]r of the Gospel at Cullross, who died at Edinburgh betwixt nine and ten of the clock at night Sept[embe]r 13th 1698... Written at first by his own hand a considerable time before his death.' 162 pages, missing all content past chapter 8., section 1.
- 'A Little Treatise Concerning Justifying or Saving Faith In Two Parts.' 547 pages. Multiple 17th, 18th and 19th century ownership marks and former shelfmarks on front and end boards and fly leaves, including several which mis-spell 'Brea' as 'Brae'.
- 'Memoirs of the life of the very Reverend Mr James Fraser of Brea minister of the Gospell sometime at Culross written by himself. Dedicated to the very Reverend Mr Thomas Ross sometime minister in Kincardine in Ross.' 359 pages in several hands. Copy used for publication, matches the text of the Edinburgh, 1738 edition. Previously rebound, with book plates belonging to John W. Ballantyne and Rev. Principal James Whyte.
- 'An account of the life of Philocris [James Fraser] containing some speciall providence of God towards him writen by himself'. Volume I. 396 pages, with the name 'William Gray signed on page 1. Text varies from published Edinburgh, 1738 edition.
- 'An account of the life of Philocris [James Fraser] containing some speciall providence of God towards him writen by himself'. Volume II. 333 pages, with a note on the front end paper which states that this is a transcription from Fraser's own copy by 'A.J.'. Text varies from published Edinbrugh, 1738 edition. Contains bookplate for James Wilson.
- Notes of sermons, 186 pages. Provenance uncertain - processing note on front endboard says 'alleged to have been written by Fraser of Brea?'
