Three notebooks relating to Henry Guthry, Bishop of Dunkeld (1600-1676)
1. Observations upon the ryse [and] progress of the late rebellion against King Charles the first in so far as it was caryed on by a malecontented faction in Scotland under the pretext of the reformation. Quarto volume, 172 pages, in a loose secretary hand. 19th century binding, titled 'Bishop Guthrie's Historie, 1636-1649' on the spine. Signature of John Jaffray, Edin[burgh] 1849 on the front flyleaf.
2. Observationes upon the arise [and] progress of the late rebellions against King Charles the first. In so far as it was carried on by a malecontented faction in Scotland under the pretext of Reformation. Quarto volume, 248 pages, in a clear secretary hand with some italic features. Flyleaf bears title 'Memoirs of Henry Guthrie... The Bishop's own manuscript'.
3. Observations upon the rise [and] progress of the late rebellion against K. Charles the first. In so far as it was carried on by a malecontented faction in Scotland, under the pretext of reformation. Folio volume, 140 pages, in a flowing italic hand. Flyleaf reads 'This manuscript was gifted to John Ogilvy of Inshewan by... John Ramsay Esq[uire] of Memus upon the 13 September 1764'. Flyleaf and front outer board bear several pen trials and doodles.
