Sermon transcriptions by James Hamilton (fl.1711)
Scope and Contents
Sermon notebook belonging to James Hamilton. Title page is layed out in a faux-print style, and reads:
"The Law was given by Moses. But grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Sermons preached att severall occasions by severall ministers of the Gospel in Edinburgh Presby. Written att first in short hand and then transcribed... be James Hamiltoun. Edinburgh. MDCCXI [1711]."
Notebook is a bound quarto with tooled boards. There are a multitude of pen trials on the fly leaves, all seemingly in Hamilton's hand and including a small coat of arms. Hamilton's hand is a relatively clear italic, but with some strong secretary features.
