Sermons of James Hutchison, minister of Killellan
Scope and Contents
Notebook of sermons collated by an unknown scribe. Sermons are meticulously recorded, each titled with a combination of the date, the holy day (if relevant), the name of the preacher, the place that the sermon was given, and the biblical passage discussed. The hand is a clear, consistent italic, which bears many secretary features.
Names of preachers include James Hutchison, James McDougall, Andrew Fauls, David Brown, John Ritchie, James Brown, John Gray, John Calquhann, John Calhonn, Alexander Sheils, John Paisley and John Stirling.
Places include Glasgow, Neilston, Greenock, Kilmalcolm, Erskine, etc. Generally, they span the Glasgow - Renfrewshire - Inverclyde area.
Dates range from 23 July 1698 to 13 August 1699. The sermons seem to only have been given during the months of July and August of each year. Generally, there is no more than a few days gap between entries, apart from the c. 11 month gap between the sermon recorded from the 13 August 1698 and that of the 15 July 1699. On occasion, more than one sermon by the same preacher is recorded on the same day.
Oblong octavo notebook, with evidence of fly leaves removed.
