Tracts [belonging to] Herbert Kennedy
Scope and Contents
Composite manuscript volume containing:
Item 1: Titled 'Tractatus logicus A Mr Herberto Kennedy philosphice professore; facile messiodo conncinncot et in quatuor partes pronumero mentis operiction redactus nec non a me George Benedicto dilliganter conscriste.'
[Tractatus Logicus By Mr. Herbert Kennedy, professor of philosophy; easily compiled and edited into four parts, with a mind for the purpose of understanding, and diligently written by me, George Benedict.]
The Latin text is dated 1684 and is decorated with basic coloured illuminations. These include the title page, initial letters, and a Porphyrian Tree diagram. 252 numbered pages. It is unclear whether George Benedict was a student of Kennedy's whilst Kennedy was regent of the University of Edinburgh.
Item 2: A Latin text begining 'Qua opticis lectiones communiter praponunts quastiones philosophicas de natura lusidi lucis [etc.]'
[In which optical lessons commonly precede philosophical questions about the nature of the play of light [etc.]']
With diagrams about light refraction. No date is present, but the final page (of 4 total) bears the name George Wilson.
Item 3: Latin text titled 'Compendium Logick'. Item 3 is 6 pages in length in very faded ink. No author's name or date have been identified.
Item 4: English text titled 'Acts of Parliament ratifying the confessions of faith and setting presbyterian church governmental the revolution ano 1690'. 8 pages in length. No author's name is apparent.
Item 5: English text, untitled, but bearing a partial copy of the poem 'The Day of Judgement' by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). 2 pages
Item 6: English text begining 'A ministerial warning to the [...] of this associate congregation'. This item is damaged, with one partial leaf present and evidence that a further 6 leaves have been removed.
Item 7: English text on the Law of Love and Chastity. This text appears to be a sermon or speech, but the date and author are unclear. 4 pages.
The end fly leaves feature pen trails and messages from a William Paterson, including 'William Paterson is my name and scotland is my nation and Colton is my [dwelling]'
A new hand on the verso of the final leaf discusses a sale - presumably of this volume - to John Ross in 1737.
