Scope and Contents
Papers of Thomas Mair, (1701 - 1768)
MS MAI 2/1/1: Composite volume.
From the front: Diary. Begins 21 July 1727, and ends 22 November 1744. Entries are inconsistent, and frequently centre on a particular sermon given, or a biblical passage recently considered. Laid into the front is a Sermon given on 8 August 1757, taken down in another hand. Quarto volume with leather binding.
From the back: Commonplace book. Quotations and notes arranged by subject (titles in Latin). Entries cover A - F, with the remainder of the alphabet titles planned out but either left blank or overwritten by the diary entries from the front.
MS MAI 2/1/2: Diary.
Begins 14 October 1728, and ends 15 January 1730. Small octavo volume with vellum binding, 108 unnumbered pages.. Previously owned by Rev. Robert Small, D.D., and bequeathed to the New College Library by Rev. George D. Low., 31 July 1911
MS MAI 2/2: Sermons
Title page reads: 'Sermons preached by Mr Thomas Mair, Minester of the Gospel at Orwal.'
Sermons given 1757 - 1761, on varying topics.
Front board bears 'John Bennet his Book - 1764'. The hand does not match that of MS MAI 2/1/1-2, perhaps indicating that Bennet took the sermons down himself. 294 numbered pages. Quarto volume with quarter binding.
