Autograph book of Janet Murray
Scope and Contents
Autograph book belonging to Elizabeth Janet Murray (1851-1935).
The volume is pre-signed on the verso pages, with lithograph prints of quotes from poets.
Entries on the recto pages are manuscript autographs, either written directly on the page or cut and pasted from letters. The written autographs seem to be from those in Murray's social circle, including her sister, Mary Armstrong, who moved to Elmira, Illinois.
The autographs pasted in are from further afield. Some letters were written to Murray directly, and others are from contributors who passed away decades earlier. Murray appears to have written to next of kin, requesting signatures for her collection.
Autographs include, among others:
- Robert Murray McCheyne
- "Miss McCheyne" - potentially Elizabeth Mary M‘Cheyne (1806 – 1888)
- Dwight Lyman (D. L.) Moody
- Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Volume is a small oblong octavo, with red leather and gold gilding.
