The letter of invitation states 'As the result of consultations which I have had with Professors J.H.S. Burleigh and T.F. Torrance of the Church of Scotland, it is planned to hold informal and unofficial discussion of doctrinal matters between members of the Church of Scotland and the Scottish Episcopal Church, together with two members of the Church of England. We feel that important as official conversations between our Churches are, yet more progress could probably be made in unofficial conversations when those who meet together are unhampered by the responsibility of being official delegates, or by some particular terms of reference.'[16 December 1950] The first meeting took place on 31 January in the Forbes Library of the Edinburgh Theological College on Rosebery Crescent.
