Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers and copies of items relating to the Methodist Mission and Church in Nigeria, in particular: articles, reports and papers about the mission (1922-1978); an index of relevant articles covering the period 1870-1970; transcripts and copies of diaries of Methodist missionaries in particular William Norcross, Paul Kingston and Christopher Hutchinson (from c 1920); and copies of letters from Alexander Fenby to his wife Grace (1927-1931).

Biographical / Historical

Stanley W. Smith was a Methodist Missionary Society missionary in Nigeria. He worked as an educational missionary and was in Nigeria from 1937 to 1952. On returning from Nigeria he worked as a minister in Hastings (1952), Huddersfield (1955), Bradford (1959), Salford (1962), Manchester (1964) and Hungerford (1966). He retained a keen interest in Nigeria and in missionary and church work throughout his life. Smith retired to Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.

The material was deposited at the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World by the Reverend Smith on various occasions in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
