Scope and Contents

This is a woodblock-printed illustration entitled "Kōfu Sake wo Tachite Issei no Kuwauju to Naru" [To Become a World-Famous Scholar After Renouncing Alcohol], illustrated by Kobayashi Toshikazu, and corrected by Tominaga Toshichika. Tōkyō: Tsuji Keiji: Fukyū sha, Meiji 21 [1888]. "Later printing".

It is a supplement to the Nishiki-e Shūshindan ("Brocade Pictures for Moral Education") series of texts for primary school students. The books, produced by Fukyū sha, Yoshitoshi, and his students, collected moral stories from the West, China, and Japan. This particular illustration accompanies the fourteenth story in volume five, found on leaf twenty-five, which relates the tale of [Hugh] Miller, the Scottish geologist, who supposedly renounced alcohol and achieved academic acclaim as a result of his subsequent studies.
