Scope and Contents The body of the letter is probably in the hand of a secretary, although the signature itself is thought to be that of Adam Ferguson. The letter dated 16 November 1815, St. Andrews, was written only 3-months or so before his death. Letter, 24 January 1959, to Vernon Watkins from Willa Muir

Scope and Contents The letter in Muir's own hand, and signed, is dated 24 January 1959, Priory Cottage, Swaffham Prior, Cambridge, and is addressed to 'Dear Vernon Watkins'. The letter is responding to Watkins' correspondence on the death of her husband, Edwin Muir. She writes that the letter 'will be a comfort to me later, when Edwin's presence in this cottage will have ceased to emphasise his absence, as it surely must do'. Autograph letter signed by Adam Ferguson to James Chalmer, solicitor, dated Hallyard, 27 March 1798.


The letter refers to a 'half yearly certificate' which Chalmer will have 'as usual'. and on which he 'will do the needfull'. Ferguson goes on to say that his 'son writes [...] that the Copper Plates are come to hand & I have desired impressions in order to know in which state they come out of Mr [?] keeping...'.

Letter and portrait relating to William Chalmers Burns

Scope and Contents This collection contains two different items: a letter (and its envelope) sent from Rong Lin to Sir William Chalmers Burns, and a photograph portraying a Chinese carpenter and Christian convert named Chu Ting Yü.1. The photograph is a portrait of Chu Ting Yü, carpenter and convert to Christianity. He knew Rev. William Chalmers Burns and allegedly made his coffin when Burns died in 1868. Photograph 13 x 9 cm. mounted on card 17 x 11 cm, and dated 18 September 1889.2....
