Scope and Contents Diary of Helena Marshall when she was a student at the 'College of Arts', Edinburgh (NB - not Edinburgh College of Arts, which was founded in 1907, but probably the Faculty of Arts of the University of Edinburgh) and (later) a governess in Russia (Petersburg) and Switzerland. Also journal consisting mainly of notes from lectures at the College of Arts on botany, geology, zoology, electricity, Italian art, etc., 1869.

Lecture Notes of John Robison

Scope and Contents Lecture notes from the time when Robison was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. The notes embrace the sciences of mechanics, hydrodynamics, astronomy and optics, together with electricity and magnetism.

It is assumed that these are Robison's own notes but this has not been verified.

Letter describing annual Spring parade of Russian troops on the

Scope and Contents The letter was written in St. Petersburg, on Grande Morskaia (Bolshaia Morskaia, or Morskaya Street), on 2nd or 15th May 1901, by W. Sedgefield, and addressed to his 'Dear Uncle', W. J. Sedgefield, Esq., Abingdon, Berkshire, England. The envelope, with franking and partial postage stamp, survives. The letter describes the 'annual spring parade of the troops quartered in and around St. P[etersburg]' which took place 'yesterday' - yesterday being 1 May 1901 - on the 'Field of Mars'....

Scope and Contents A sizeable collection of theatre/concert programmes from the North Russian Association (1928-1940). Founded in 1926, the North Russian Association grew out of a group set up by emigrants from Arkhangelsk living in London after the Revolution. Its interests were cultural, and it organised five events a year such as lectures, concerts, and other performances. Victorian family photograph album with sixty-one photographs of Russian vendors and tradesmen by William Carrick

Scope and Contents This is a first quality Victorian family photograph album of the family of Eliza Murphy, daughter of Calvert Toulmin who was a shipowner holding the monopoly of postal carriage to Australia.

In addition to 196 'carte de visite' photographs of family members including Calvert Toulmin, of holiday destinations and of sentimental group poses, the album contains 57 photographs of Russian tradesmen and street vendors taken by William Carrick.
