Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing songs, poems, tales, names, vocabulary and expressions collected in the Outer Hebrides [Na h-Eileanan an Iar]. The first part of the volume contains transcriptions taken as Carmichael listened to informants in 1877 while the second part appears to be copies of previous transcriptions of material collected by Carmichael and Rev Malcolm MacPhail in 1874 and written into the notebook in 1891. Note relating to the MacCodrum family, to which John MacCodrum, the bard, belonged, including that the family were 'Oda[i]r nan ron' [Caisteal Odair of the seals] and that their land was in Griminis/Griminish, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist. John MacCodrum's patronymic is given and mention is made of 'Poul rua (Maclean) Houghge[arry]' [Hogha Gearraidh/Hougharry] that he was ''s motha is a mac Odrum' []. Poem beginning 'Dàcheann a dh'fàg an t-earrachal', with a note on vocabulary and the background story of two good friends, Iain ic Fhearchair [John MacCodrum] and Mac Aonas Gheobha [Mac Aonghais Ghobha] who went out on the moor, lost each other, one ending up on 'moineach Ebhall' [Eabhal/Eaval, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist] and the other on 'Cill-èirebhagh, Beinn am faothla' [Cill Eirebhagh/Kilerivagh, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula]. The poem is composed of four lines.
