Three stories collected from John MacKinnon, Cairinis/Carinish, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist about crodh mara or sea-cattle and the MacDonalds. The first story tells how Mac Dhonuil Dui lived in a house 200 yards west of Teampull na Trionaid with his wife but they had no family or cattle. Transcription notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The majority of the volume has been used but intermittently there are groups of blank folios. Carmichael appears to have written in the book in the 1860s creating sections of different genres at different stages in the volume, with pages left blank in between to fill up appropriately. In about 1875 he has then used some of these blank pages to transcribe notes and stories but has not kept to the genres sections he initially created....

Two sketch plans of Dun-Torcuil [Dùn Thorcuill/Dun Torcuill, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist], the first noting the dimensions of the walls including any difference between the sizes at the bottom or the top of the wall, and the location of the passageway. The circular shape of the dun has been marked into four sections and measured according to those areas. The second has also been marked in this way but contains many fewer measurements.

Two stories about shooting birds including that [-] Ross, gamekeeper, shot a forked tailed gled [kite] in 1884 and that in Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist he tried to shot at a greylag goose and on going to retrieve it, it was taken by a peregrine falcon and eaten before he got to it. He shot at the falcon but failed and eventually got it by setting a trap. The falcon went into the possession of Captain John [Maccalum]. Text has been scored through as if transcribed elsewhere.

Two stories relating to the hangings in Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist and accompanying etymological note probably collected from an unnamed 'Orinsay woman' [Orasaigh/Oronsay] who Carmichael had met. The woman told him that that the name of 'La-le-an-tsamhrai' [Latha leth an t-samhraidh] had been changed to 'Laiilleain' [Latha 'Illeathain] because a MacLean had been hanged on that day.
