Journal entry on leaving Tarasaigh/Taransay having been there for '4 nights & 3 days and rec[eive]d much kindness' and accompanying biographical note about Mrs MacDonald of Taransay that three of her grandfathers were 'tighearnan' and that her 'g[rea]t grandfath[er] had all the mount[ain]s and Aoi [Uidh] &c &c.'

Note collected from Mrs MacDonald, Tarasaigh/Taransay stating that the peck is still in use there, that she will keep to the 'cleac[hd]anean coir a bhann sa linn fhe[in]' for measuring, noting the relative quantities of the old peck at three gallons, and that the Lews [Lewis] peck was four gallons, something which Carmichael would have to check. Carmichael also notes that the customs for paying servants is the same in Taransay as it is in Uibhist/Uist.

Story about Mr Auladh, 10 July 1870

Story telling how Mrs MacDonald of Taransay's great grandfather died leaving one son. The child's mother being ill and unsure if she would put him into the care of Mr Auladh [Rev Aulay MacAulay] leaving him 'mile marag (mark)' for the son's education. MacAulay sent him to Stornoway [Steòrnabhagh/Stornoway, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis] for three years and then taught him Latin himself, thus faithfully carrying out his duties.
