Account of 'Clann 'Ic Illemhicheil' [Carmichaels], collected from Eoghan Mac Illemhicheil [Hugh Carmichael], age 80, Druim-na-moine, Apuinn [Druim-na-moina, Apainn/Appin, Earra-Ghàidheal/Argyllshire] in which he describes the family as being the oldest clan in the area (six hundred years), originating in Annat. He gives a brief account of Alexander's own family, the Barons of Taigh Sgurrain: their descent from the Easbaig Bàn or Fair-haired Bishop, and the loss of their lands to Sir Donald...

In it, Carmichael is pining for his pregnant wife Mary, who is in Edinburgh and is anxious about her health. It is clear that there has been a lack of correspondence between them causing each of them distress 'No letter no watch. God grant that she is well. Journal account written by Alexander Carmichael of the departure of his son Eoghan for Africa describing seeing him off at Waverley Station, Edinburgh, noting who met him in London and that he set sail on the 'SS Scot' from London, England for Chinde, East Africa [Mozambique]. Of his departure, Carmichael writes 'Poor darling boy! We shall not see him at the soonest for five years - perhaps never. God alone knows. This is the first break in the family.'
