Has a disability pension and NHI - really a last war casualty. Was wounded several times. "A poor looking crater". Family life harmonious.'

"Spends six months of every year in bed. Has asthma. Describes symptoms of angina but at the wrong time. Chronic invalid. Opens his shop three times a week for two house. No one know how he makes a living. Cannot walk to the shop, always goes by car though it is a very short distance. Wife living. [Male informant] - was severely gassed in the last war. Home conditions comfortable, peaceful."

"This woman suffers from asthma, her breathing is always very laboured, gets very depressed about it. She is a widow, lives alone, has no family. Her house is too big for her and she is unable to look after it or herself properly, but the neighbours help. She has tried to have people to stay with her but does not get on well with them. Dr says this woman is senile. She has had carcinoma and now has a bad heart. Is lonely and very sorry for herself."

"This girl is a cook. She is deformed and stooped with thin arms, imagines she can play the organ, which she can't, thinks she can do things better than anyone else. Nice girl to talk to, sings in a choir. [Female informant] says this is a peculiar but decent wee soul; bright, musical, very religious. Quite a capable housekeeper."

Dirty house, 2 rooms for 2, nobody else would live in it. PAO: pickled - will never die, alert mentally but very old. Widow's pension and supplement. Dr - senile, chronic tippler."

[Male informant] should not be living alone, definitely mental. Has £100 a year plus NHI. Keeps hens. Relatives help. Nurse confirms, defective. Fairly clean."
