Scope and Contents

This is a collection of illustrations taken from printed books, representing characters in costume from Shakespear's plays, and Restoration plays. Three envelopes, labelled: "Shakespeare" (53 illustrations), "Mainly Restoration drama" (24 illustrations), and "To be identified - Mainly Restoration drama" (25 illustrations). Most illustrations date from the 1770s, and have been "Published for Bells British Theatre".

Scope and Contents Black and white photograph of a Rectorial Battle in Autumn 1883, showing a great number of students in costume at the Old College Quad, University of Edinburgh. Given the style of the photograph, and the fact that one of the banners shows the name "Blackie" [rest is illegible], it is possible that this picture was taken when some students were protesting for John Stuart Blackie to be an independent candidate for Rector in 1883.Another banner shows the words "Ake!
