This is the first edition of Zoo File, a newsletter for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Winter 1987.

The magazine contains updates of the goings on at Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. In this edition, there are articles on the Red Panda, white-fronted lemur, animal portraiture, prairie dogs, and details of new arrivals and departures from the RZSS's zoos.

The annual reports contain information such as; members of the RZSS and council; report from the council (fellowship, lectures, donations); information on developments at the Edinburgh Zoo site; health of stock; visitor numbers; breeding; stock; feeding; abstract of the park; list of donors and their donations (animals); list of fellows. ...

A collection of lantern slides, possibly taken by Mary Elizabeth Gillespie, Thomas Gillespie's wife. The photographs are mainly of animals at Edinburgh Zoo. Further details of individual slides can be found at item level.

Scope and Contents

This box contains glass plate negatives which have been badly damaged by water ingress. The images on these slides are only partially visable. Due to the water damage which took place prior to the RZSS archive project in 2019, many of the plates fused together. These have now been separated by the project conservator.

Care is to be taken when handing these slides.

There are two glass plate negative collections in this box, the first being glass plate negatives which are among the most damaged of the collection. They are fragile with flaked emulsion and/or stuck together. Digital copies of these images are available. More information on the individual slides can be found at item level. The second is a collection of rodent photographs.

Two glass plate negatives which have become stuck together due to humidity and water damage. Attempting to separate these slides would lead to more damage.
One image is of a man holding a falcon, whilst the other is of a crowd of zoo visitors looking into an enclosure.
