Scope Note: The Principal is responsible for the overall operation of the University, is President of the Senatus Academicus and ex-officio, a member of the University Court. Since the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1858, the Principal has also been Vice-Chancellor.

This may be the same John Lee who was later Principal of the university, and who was awarded his doctorate in 1801.
