Notes for 4 lectures on the 'Volcanic History of Britain', given to the Royal Institution in 1886. Sir Archibald Geikie looked at the emergence of types of geological formations against a geological timeframe and how they have been affected by various processes, especially the action of volcanoes and materials produced by them, within the natural world. He used examples from numerous locations from different parts of the British Isles.

Two notebooks created to contain work, with Georg Hartung, and others, relating to Madeira – with references to Canary Islands, Gran Canarias, Tenerife and the Azores. No indexes in either, the notebooks record discussions, reading, and include drawings and copy letters (in Mary's writing) on volcanoes, lava slopes, shells, elevations and upheaval.

Scope and Contents This red notebook contains a record of Charles Lyell’s geological travels around the Canary Islands with Georg Hartung, in the company of Mary Lyell, and Charles and Frances Bunbury, and along with previous notebook 193, is one of the longest. There is a clear date noted on page 1, of 6th March 1854, however, in the separate index recorded in the Madeira Index reference Coll-203/A5/16 dates are given there as 26th – 29th October 1855 – which may reflect the date the index was created.
