On being asked where he was from and who his family were he responded that he was from the north and his people were Mac Iogain to which the old man recited a verse beginning 'Iogain ga do thug mi bithe dhuit, Im is cais[e]...

The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part. These include 'Laoidh na Muileartaich', 'Duan an Deirg' and 'A' Bhraoin Chaorain'....

The first story tells of a foster-brother of Nighean Mhic Neill came from Barraigh/Isle of Barra to visit her at Caisteal Borgh but unable to get across the ford he stayed at a shoemaker's house. Scope and Contents Two stories about Ruary an tartair [Ruairidh an Tartair or Roderick MacNeil], the first being that when he had dinner he would send a servant to the top of He-eveall [Sheabhal/Heabhal, Barraigh/Isle of Barra] with a trumpet to proclaim as such, noting that 'Biola-creag was the badge on MacNeils livery' [Bual na Creige/Biulacraig, Miùghlaigh/Mingulay] and that it is the 'third if not the second highest [cliff] in Britain'.
