Scope and Contents Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing field and transcribed material. The notebook is inscribed on the front inside cover with the following: 'Scrap Book MS No1 Alex[ander] Carmichael (of Lismore) Inland Revenue Lochmaddy N[orth] Uist] 1864'. On the recto side of the fly leaf is written 'Angus MacDonald Staoinebrig tale teller' and on the verso side of the fly leaf is written 'Bought at Drew's Saint columb Cornwall this 17 day of Nov[ember] 1864 A. A. Carmichael p2/3'....

Scope and Contents Field notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael, noted as being 'Bought at St Columb, Cornwall, 30 Nov[ember] 1864 pr[ice] 2/3'. The back inside cover contains a note probably collected as part of excise duties which reads 'Rod[erick] MacPhie Mast of boat 21.8 [-] 1.2½ [-]'. The notebook contains one insertion. The majority of the notebook contains lore relating to Miùlaigh/Mingulay mostly collected from Roderick MacNeil, crofter, aged 88, known as Ruairidh an Rùma. Roderick MacNeil also...

Note entitled 'Bardac na Feinne' [Bàrdachd na Fèinne or Fenian Poetry] containing a short description of the material Carmichael is going to transcribe, when he collected it and when he is transcribing it. He writes, 'Toisicheam mata air an fheasgar so fhein - feasgar Di-sathuirne, mios deireannach an Fhoghraidh an 22mh 1864,' [I will begin this very afternoon, Saturday, October 22nd 1864].
