The story gives the background to the song telling how Dubhan or Suaran invited Fionn and his men to his house with the intention of killing them. His daughter, who had fallen for Fionn, got wind of this and warned him and so they were spared but when Dubhan found out he killed her...

The note states that John Smith in Baghasdal [Boisdale, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] has the story and that Patruig Smith [Peter or Patrick Smith] also has the story 'Sgeul Choise Cèin'. The story begins with Fionn and his men out hunting. They have so much success that they decide to leave some of it for collection on the way home. Transcription notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The majority of the volume has been used but intermittently there are groups of blank folios. Carmichael appears to have written in the book in the 1860s creating sections of different genres at different stages in the volume, with pages left blank in between to fill up appropriately. In about 1875 he has then used some of these blank pages to transcribe notes and stories but has not kept to the genres sections he initially created....

The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part. These include 'Laoidh na Muileartaich', 'Duan an Deirg' and 'A' Bhraoin Chaorain'....
