Scope and Contents Song entitled 'Duan an Deirg' collected from Alasdair Donullach [Alexander MacDonald], crofter, Boradh, Barra [Borgh/Borve, Barraigh/Isle of Barra], composed of thirty-six stanzas of four lines each. The first verse begins 'Ailis dhuinn Oisein dhanaich, Mhic Fhinn shuaicne o righ ghradhiach'. An accompanying note states '948 since this came to Barra by the Lees na Liasaich'. A pencil calculation above indicates that '948' refers to the 948 AD. Written transversely on folio 24r is...

Song entitled 'Laoi Dhiarmaid' collected from Alasdair Donullach [Alexander MacDonald], crofter, Borgh/Borve, Barraigh/Isle of Barra, composed of twenty-four stanzas of four lines each. The first stanza begins 'Eisdeibh beag mas aill leibh laoi, Air a mhuinntir a dh-falbh uainn'. A transverse note on folio 21v reads 'Transcribed'.

The first stanza begins 'La dha'n Fhinn air tulach Oirill, Gaurac Eirinn mu tiomchioll'. The accompanying note explains how the Muireartach was Rìgh Lochlann's [King of Norway] nurse and the wife of Lon Mhic, the Lochlann's chief blacksmith, who made Fionn's sword. Scope and Contents Transciption notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The inside front cover is inscribed in ink with 'Bought at Wadebridge Cornwall Dec[ember] 1 1864 p 1/6 A A Carmichael' and the opposite page has 'A A Carmichael' written on it in pencil. The notebook contains Fenian songs or tales mainly collected in Uibhist a Deas/South Uist and Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula, some of which are repeated in full or in part. These include 'Laoidh na Muileartaich', 'Duan an Deirg' and 'A' Bhraoin Chaorain'....
