Parents have been in court. At present on unemployment benefit - was sacked for smoking at his work. Has otherwise been regular at work. They have had a lot of trouble at home. Nurse: He won't work and won't want. Father, a labourer, 50+, looks weedy and syphilitic. Mother, 40+, seems OK. They fight a lot - have been in court for it....

Scope and Contents 'This boy is a certified MD with an IQ of 70-. He knows very little, has a cowed look like all the dull children, is as "dull as ditchwater". Bad attender. Thin and overgrown looking. Well clad and always has plenty of money. Dr: quiet and retiring, cries easily. Skull hotcross bun type with boss in parietal region, no other evidence of syphilis. Housing is very bad. Two roomed condemned cottage for 3 adults and 5 children. [Male informant] has seen six sleeping in one...

"A wee bit mental, very bad eyesight, has had an awful life. "Battered stupid". Husband a drunken sod. Family are all wasters. Delapidated house, rent £2.15/-. Passable. Grossly overcrowded, 2 small rooms for 6. Always looks worried. Nurse thinks she is all right but that her eyesight makes her look queer. Dr says this woman is syphilitic and simple, suffers from endarteritis."

Manuscript volume of notes of lectures given by Douglas Argyll Robertson at Edinburgh University in 1887. Inscription on endpaper: "Walter H.S. Stalkartt, Edinburgh University, December 1887. Notes on Diseases of the Eyes. (A. Robertson)". Also included is a 16pp. pamphlet by Stalkett, HMS Ajax, on Syphilis, which was loosely inserted in the notebook.

Scope and Contents The Sir George Ballingall material is composed of correspondence and papers, 1801-1855. In March 1995, when researching in Edinburgh University Library, Dr. Roger Cooter of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, in Manchester, dictated the papers onto tape and produced transcripts of about 70 per cent of the documents, following the order in which they had been placed in the original boxes.
