Scope Note: Subnormal intellectual functioning which originates during the developmental period. This has multiple potential etiologies, including genetic defects and perinatal insults. Intelligence quotient (IQ) scores are commonly used to determine whether an individual has an intellectual disability. IQ scores between 70 and 79 are in the borderline range. "This girl had an IQ of 73; was very dull at school but "a nice, willing, obliging lassie". She is now in domestic service. She was a boarded out girl. Her dead mother was eccentric and "almost a mental case". Very difficult confinement and it was said it was a pity she did not die at birth. Illegitimate. Very good worker, was on PA, now self-supporting."

"This man has been in CR; at his wedding someone told the minister that "he should be there yet." He wept so much at his wedding that there were two pools of water on the floor. At present has TB and is not expected to recover. [Male informant] says he was not a loony but his mental standard was very low - had to be supervised in everything he did."

"This boy had an IQ of 74 at school. He is now working in a grocer's. He was definitely dull and couldn't be taught at school; out of school he was a bully but easily reduced to tears. He is illegitimate. Dr says this boy is a bit queer, will require to be watched. Not defective."
