The material chiefly contains correspondence between the Smithsonian Institution, who hosted the symposium, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It appears that, at the Symposium, Waddington delivered a presentation on pattern generation in cone shells. The material also includes a typescript titled 'Notes on the Organisation of Civil Scientific Research in the United States' by Waddington.
