Biography
General Council was estabished by the Universities (Scotland) Act of 1858 to include as members the Chancellor, the members of University Court, the Professors and graduates of the University. In 1922, this was extended to include lecturers of one year's standing. This has continued to be revised as the University has grown and developed.
It is the responsibility of General Council to elwect the Chancellor and it has three seats (Assessors) on University Court. Between twice-yearly full meetings, business is undertaken by the General Council Business Committee.
