University of Edinburgh. Chancellor (1859-)
Biography
Along with the Rector (in its modern guise) and Vice-Chancellor, the office of Chancellor was instituted following the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858. Elected by the General Council as its President, the office was held for life until 2010, when the then Duke of Edinburgh retired after almost six decades in the role. The Chancellor nominates an Assessor to sit on University Court.
