Biography
John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, was the first surviving son of Sir Winston Churchill (1620-1688) and Elizabeth Drake (1622-1698). An army officer and politician his career spanned the reigns of five monarchs.

Note protesting the sale of the manuscript letters of Queen Ann [sic] and the first Duke of Marlborough to Sir Charles Hedges, Secretary of State. The grandaughter of Sir Charles married into the Montague family at Lackham House, Wiltshire in 1742 and the letters had been considered a family heirloom since that time.
