Biography

Gerardus was educated at the University of Leiden, where he studied classics, Hebrew, church history and theology and where he first met Hugo Grotius. In 1614 he became director of the theological college at Leiden and began to establish an international reputation as a scholar. He published his 'Historia Pelagiana' in 1617. He accepted a prebend at Canterbury Catheral in 1629, but returned to the Netherlands in 1632 and was a professor of history in Amsterdam where he stayed until his death in 1649.
