Biography

Rufinus, of Aquileia (Tyrannius Rufinus) was a fourth-century Christian monk and theologian, best known for his translations from Greek to Latin of work by Origen, a second and third-century Christian theologian and scholar. Rufinus was born near Aquileia, in northern Italy. In 401, Rufinus was commissioned by Bishop Chromatius of Aquileia to translate the Historia Ecclesiastica by Eusebius as an antidote to the terror caused by the Gothic incursions into Italy. He also translated Origen's homilies for the whole Heptateuch except Deuteronomy, and others on selected Psalms, the Song of Songs, and 1 Samuel.
