Biography

The Right Honourable Sir Robert Liston was a Scottish diplomat who was born in Kirkliston in 1742. He studied languages at the University of Edinburgh and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1784. His linguistic skills led to a career in the diplomatic service, in both Europe and America.
