Biography

William Fordyce Mavor was born in New Deer, Aberdeenshire in 1758. In 1775 he obtained a post as assistant master at Thomas Hunter's private school at Burford in Oxfordshire where he taught for 7 years. He began his writing career during this period, going on to publish a considerable number of educational works over his lifetime, with his most famous work being, The English Spelling Book, published in 1801. He started his own school in 1782 and took holy orders in 1784 and was given the vicarage of Hurley, Berkshire due to the patronage of the Duke of Malborough. In 1789 the degree of LL.D. was conferred upon him by the University of Aberdeen. He later became rector of Stonesfield, Oxfordshire,
