Biography

Janet Alice Chalmers (née Lorimer) was born to parents Hannah Stodart Lorimer (1835-1916) and James Lorimer (1818-1890) in 1857. Janet Alice was nicknamed 'Alice', 'Polly', 'Ploks' and 'Ploko' by family members. She married British colonial judge Sir David Chalmers (1835-1899) in 1878. The couple lived in British Guiana (now Guyana) and had a maid named Joanna, nicknamed 'Nan' or 'Nana'.

Janet Alice Chalmers and Sir David Chalmers had six children: David Patrick (b.1880), Hannah Helen (b.1882), Alison Bell (b.1884), Thomas Michael (1886-1904), James Lorimer (b.1888), and Esther Barbara (1894-1983).
