Biography

Adam Anderson, Lord Anderson, FRSE (1797 – 1853) was a Scottish judge and Senator of the College of Justice. From 1835 to 1841 he was Sheriff of Perth. He served as Solicitor General for Scotland from 1842 to 1846 and as Lord Advocate from February to May 1852.

A collection of letters written by Mughal Emperor ‘Ālamgīr (r. 1658 to 1707 C.E.) to Amīr-Khān and others.


These were collected, as stated in the introduction, after the death of Amīr-Khān (circa 1131 A.H., 1719 C.E.), by his son Sayyid Ashraf-Khān (Mīr Muḥammad Husaynī), from the remnants left by his father.

A record of the movements and encampments of the Emperor ‘Ālamgīr (r. 1658 to 1707 C.E.), from the third Rabī‘ II, 1066 A.H. (1665 C.E.), to the fourth of Jumādá II, 1099 A.H. (1687 C.E.), the thirty-fourth year of his reign. Besides the places of encampment, the length of stay and the time taken to pass from one place to another are also recorded.

Scope and Contents An epic poem celebrating the exploits of Sām (son of Narīmān), who succeeded Garshāsp as Jahān-Pahlawān, and his romantic love with Princess Parīdukht, daughter of the Emperor of China. A poem in praise of London, composed during his travels in Europe, by Mirzā Abū Ṭālib Khān Hindī Isfahānī (d 1220 or 1221 A.H., 1805-1806 C.E.).


It contains a portrait of the author "Engraved by Ridley from an original picture painted by Russel," for the European Magazine. The present manuscript was copied for the owner, James Anderson, by George Swinton.

A commentary on the difficult verses in the Qaṣīdahs of Imām Afz̤al al-Dīn Badil Ibrāhīm b. 'Alī Najjār "Khāqānī" of Shirvān who died at Tabriz, between 582 and 595 A.H. /1186 and 1199 C.E., by Muḥammad bin Dāūd (here Dād) ‘Alawī Shādiyābādī. Copied in the village of Tamwarlī in Tilingānah, India.

A compendium of medicine in verse, compiled, 990 A.H. (1582 C.E.) by Shihāb al-Dīn b. ‘Abd al- Karīm.


A Descriptive Catalogue of the Arabic and Persian Manuscripts in Edinburgh University Library by Mohammad Hukk et al. (1925) says of the dating: "about 1133 A.H. (1720 C.E.)" and that the scribe is "Chanpā, son of Aithippā'. See Or Ms 257 for further discussion of this scribe.
