An enormously varied book list, in partial citation. 'Dr Rule' may be Gilbert Rule (c1629-1701), a nonconformist divine who was made principal of Edinburgh University in 1690.

In front of the catalogue is a list of benefactors to the Library and Latin dedications to the Lord Provost & Town Council and to Principal Rule. At the end are lists of the contents of a chest 'at Ostium Bibliothecae Orientale posita', some anatomical specimens and 'icones virorum illustrium'.
