Scope and Contents Composite item made up of three folios pasted to a fourth.Main item is a fragment of a letter from Harriet Hepburne-Scott [Lady Polwarth] to Marianne Talbert. Lady Polwarth reminisces about a visit to Charles Montagu-Scott [4th Duke of Buccleuch], various whig balls during childhood, and a recent letter from William Laidlaw.The second and third folios adhered are pencil portraits, both made in 1837. The first is captioned 'Hugh Scott of Harden 1800 / Baron Polwarth...

Scope and Contents

A series of papers relating to Sir Walter Scott, compiled by Marianne Talbot. Fragments come from varying sources, united by a shared theme.

Talbot met Scott during his time in Naples, October 1831-March 1832. She described him as "poor Sir Walter", who was "tired with heat [and] light [and] foreigners" during his period of ailing health. Scott died within a year of their meeting.
