Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing songs, poems, tales, names, vocabulary and expressions collected in the Outer Hebrides [Na h-Eileanan an Iar]. The first part of the volume contains transcriptions taken as Carmichael listened to informants in 1877 while the second part appears to be copies of previous transcriptions of material collected by Carmichael and Rev Malcolm MacPhail in 1874 and written into the notebook in 1891. Story entitled 'Caileach Ghlinn Dorcha' probably collected from John MacInnes, aged 70 years, Stadhlaigearraidh/Stilligarry, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist. The story tells how a man met an old woman who called herself 'Cailleach a' Ghlinn Dorcha'. When he asked her how old she was she replied that she was so old she could remember when there nut trees in Bornish [Bornais] and after further conversation she vanished. Story entitled 'Mac Dhearg' [Muc Dhearg] collected from Iain Macinnes [John MacInnes], aged 70 years, Staoligeary [Stadhlaigearraidh/Stilligarry, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist]. The story tells of a woman in Howgearry [Hogha Gearraidh/Hougharry, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist] whose child is replaced by a changeling and all he will say is ''muc dhearg muc dhearg'. MacIlleMhoire sends the woman and child to MacMhuirich Mòr in Stilligarry who manages to change the child back by repeating 'Muc dhearg'...
