Scope and Contents Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing field and transcribed material. The notebook is inscribed on the front inside cover with the following: 'Scrap Book MS No1 Alex[ander] Carmichael (of Lismore) Inland Revenue Lochmaddy N[orth] Uist] 1864'. On the recto side of the fly leaf is written 'Angus MacDonald Staoinebrig tale teller' and on the verso side of the fly leaf is written 'Bought at Drew's Saint columb Cornwall this 17 day of Nov[ember] 1864 A. A. Carmichael p2/3'....

Scope and Contents Song entitled 'Braon binn' [Am Bron Binn or The Sweet Sorrow] collected from Iain MacLeoid [John MacLeod], crofter, Iocar [Ìochdar, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist]. The song begins 'Chunnaig righ Braitean na shuain, An aona bhean a b fhear smaigh fo'n ghrein' and is composed of forty lines. An accompanying note states that the woman in the song was a sorceress who made the king dream and she killed Sir Falaich. Carmichael also notes the name of Angus McInnes [Angus MacInnes], Smerclait...

Scope and Contents Song entitled 'Lorg An Ogain' collected from Aonas Mac Aonais [Angus MacInnes], crofter, Smearcleit [Smeircleit/Smercleit, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] on 13 January 1865, beginning 'Lorg an ogain seach an t-ath, An ceum ro-mhath tha ro-dhian'. The song is composed of thirty-seven lines, two lines of which have been denoted as 'Fonn'. Pencil annotations mark the text into eighteen verses. The accompanying story gives the background to the song in which someone is stealing the Fenians' food...
