Scope and Contents
Note of some Arabic versions of Apollonius' "Sectio Ratione" in the Bodleian Library, that possess Latin glosses by Edward Bernard, Gregory's predecessor in the Savilian Chair of Astronomy, and one other person. Bernard had wished to publish the works of the ancient mathematicians; this manuscript he found defective and abandoned, unable to translate completely. [His partial translation was copied out by Gregory as B37, and used by Sir Edmund Halley to learn enough Arabic to translate the whole.] Rough references follow as well to works by Claudius Ptolemy and Archimedes. 3 English jottings from the next year-and-a-half fill out the page, noting the death of Queen Mary II at Kensington, the worsening myopia of his Oxford friend John Wallis, and the apparent bequeathal to Gregory of his colleague Richard Busby's tractate on algebra for posthumous editing and publishing.
