Visitor book from the Original Department of Surgery, University of Edinburgh, October 1933-early 1940s
Scope and Contents
Visitor book containing about 200 autographs, principally of eminent pre-war surgeons from all over the world reflecting the status of the University's famous medical school. For example, Clovis Vincent, the French Neurosurgeon, who operated on Ravel, regrettably without success, signs in July 1938.
The first signature in the book is of distinguished Edinburgh University Alumnus, J. M. Barrie, author of "Peter Pan" and University Chancellor from 1930 until his death in 1937.
In July 1938, John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, signs on the day he was installed as Chancellor of the University, along with the University Principal, Thomas Henry Holland, and honorary degree recipients on that day, Sir John Anderson, MP for the Scottish universities, Walter Elliot, Minister of Health, and W. S Morison, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The book presumably fell into disuse on the commencement of hostilities, although there are a couple of later entries.
