Breviary (Salisbury), early 14th century

 Part
Identifier: MS 27/ff. 1r-482v

Contents

This is a Sarum Breviary with a full Sarum Litany, and a Kalendar with an unclear provenance. The occurrence of specific saints days (Saint Botulph, Saint Frideswyde, and Saint Hugh, specified as Bishop of Lincoln) may point to Lincoln diocese. Relating to the dating of this text, the presence of the Feast of Relics on 15 September places it before 1319, while external evidence also seems to suggest the early years of the 14th century. There are no marks of Scottish origin, but from the many 14th and 15th century additions, including the insertion of saints, and deaths in the Kalendar, and most notably the Service of Saint Kentigern at the end of the book, it is evident that it soon came into Scottish hands, very possibly during the Wars of Independence. A considerable number of the death notices and many of the saints in the Kalendar are connected with Aberdeen and the North, and the name of Saint Machar (Duplex Festum in the Kalendar), as well as the dedication of the Cathedral Church of Aberdeen, (3 November), is added, so that its connections are evidently with that diocese. There are also numerous additions to the Kalendar, including the insertion of the number of lessons and the names of saints, written by at least four different hands of the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Kalendar starts on f. 1

The Proprium de Tempore on f.7

The Benedictiones Matutinales; de Omnibus Sanctis; in Nativitate Domini; de Corpore Christi; de Purificatione; de Conceptione by a 15th century hand starts on f.227v.

The Rubricae Generales, with the corrections made in the Sarum Ordinate by the Succentor of Sarum in 1278, in a different 15th century hand is on ff. 229-231v.

Psalter with Canticles starts on f. 233

On f. 280v begins Litany.

On ff. 284-288 is Procession and Mass of the Feast of Corpus Christ.

The Proprium Sanctorum begins on f.244.

The Commune Sanctorum much damaged, begins on f.444

The volume finishes with Service of Saint Kentigern on ff.478-82, in another 15th century hand, but very damaged on the top half of the folios.

Writing

A second hand has added the Rubricae Generates, a third the Procession and Mass of Corpus Christi and a fourth the Service of S. Kentigern(15th century). The last two are distinctly Scottish in type.
