Scope and Contents

Story entitled 'Birnie's Tyranny' in which John MacMillan, skipper in Daliburgh [Dalabrog, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] goes to court to claim a debt owed him, is late for court because his son has an accident and the court finds against him in his absence. He goes to the fiscal with the decree and the fiscal tells him that the decree is illegal. When [William] Birnie, the factor finds out he threatens MacMillan that he will throw him off his croft if he does not make sure the decree is reinstated. MacMillan refuses, 'Should you put me out of Uist and out of the Kingdom I who know the truth of the case will not submit to such a decree'.
