Scope and Contents

Story entitled 'Mac Shir Eoghan Lochial agus Mac Sir Lundrum an Eireann' [or 'Mac Shir Eothain Lochiall agus Mac Iarl Anntruim an Eirinn'] [The son of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel and the son of the Earl of Antrim in Ireland] collected from Aoghnas [Aonghas] Peton [Angus Beaton] Bearnasdal, [Bearnasdail/Bernisdale, An t-Eilean Sgitheanach/Isle of Skye]. The story tells how Sir Ewen's son heard of a beautiful young woman who lived near Edinburgh and despite his father's warning that it would be pointless to do so unless he had a job, he set off to find her. He meets her nurse who tells him that she is only interested in a man who has a job and is not interested in marrying for another year. Sir Ewen's son returns home and tells his father what happened. His father then trains him in swordsmanship and the young man sets off again to wait for a year for the young woman. On his way to Edinburgh he meets the Earl of Antrim's son and tells him his plan to marry the young woman. The Earl of Antrim's son goes off to the young woman's house and decides that he will marry her and this is agreed with her father. Sir Ewen's son hearing about this goes to the father's house whereupon the father offers him his niece in marriage instead. A double wedding is arranged but at the point when the minister marries the couples, Sir Ewen's son slips and the young woman's hand is joined with his and therefore they are married. The Earl of Antrim's son is angry about this and says that his wife has only one eye and challenges Sir Ewen's son to a duel. Sir Ewen's son does not let on that he is a skilled swordsman and tries to get out of the duel but it takes place and Sir Ewen's son first cuts off a button from Antrim's son's collar, then cuts off his whiskers and as Antrim has not yet conceded finally cuts off his ear taunting him that he now has only one ear just as his wife has only one eye.
