Scope and Contents
Song entitled 'Cailleach an Oir' collected from Mrs MacDonald, Boradhay Isle [Bhorogaigh/Vorogay, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist] beginning 'Hiri iuaibh horo shiri iura bho ro, Chi mi duradh anns aghart'. The song is composed of twelve lines. The accompanying story tells how there was an old woman who was hoarding money for her next husband. Her three sons feared she would die before they found the money and so tricked her by making an effigy of a lover for her. On seeing the figure she set about preparing a wedding feast and 'She pl[ace]d her one foot upon the ulai and then they [the sons] ascertained that place of its concealment.' Written transversely across the text in ink is, 'B[ook] 3 p[age] [-] Tran[scribed] 18 June 1869 A[lexander] A[rchibald] C[armichael]'.
