Story about a witch stopping a cow producing milk, 1904
Scope and Contents
Story collected from Miss MacPherson, Phoness Villa, Morningside, Dùn Èideann/Edinburgh about a witch stopping a cow producing milk. The story was told to the informant by her mother, 'a woman of great intelligence and sterling integrity' who said that it happened while she was milking ' a beautiful cow and a fine milker'. The witch was passing the door of the byre while she was milking and asked how the cow was milking to which Miss MacPherson's mother replied 'S beag is fearrd thus co dhiu...But little is she the better of you at any rate.' As soon as she had responded 'the milk suddenly stopped' and no patting or coaxing of the cow would encourage any more to come.
